Wow, it has been a long time since I've updated our blog. Now that I don't have to have all eyes on our puppy it frees me up to do a few more things around the house! Cole and Jack have settled into their school routines and all is well. Cole is in second grade. He loves school, and his teacher Mrs. Frost, is superb. She does much needed movement breaks and teaches them fun songs in the process. He has been making friends and having fun at baseball, gymnastics and now cub scouts. We have a lot to be thankful for as his road has been quite bumpy. He drew a picture yesterday and there was a smiley face right in the middle of it. I asked him if it was the sun, or perhaps the man in the moon. He simply said "that's because I'm happy". That picture speaks volumes and I will treasure it forever. Jack is loving preschool. He has made friends quickly and is very studious according to his teacher. Each week he has to collect items that begin with the letter of the week. He loves it and fills his bag with such pride! Other than school he enjoys coloring, legos, transformers, and gymnastics. The dog bite below his eye has healed for the most part and he will have a small scar to remind us of Opal's puppy days. Opal has calmed and we don't see any aggressive tendencies around the house. Of note, Jack and Haven have been better about invading her space:) Haven is up at a neighbor's house right now, which is why I have finally had the time to write this. I am in a babysitting co-op with my friends and Haven is just so thrilled. She loves to be with kids. Thursdays I have put her in a dance class with just 2 other little girls. She LOVES it and it is so perfect for her at this age. Other than that she is just my buddy and goes with me everywhere, usually with a smile on her face. Her name suits her so perfectly. Tom passed his oral boards and is now board certified! What an accomplishment. He is working here for the Navy and will soon be putting in some extra hours at Newport Hospital. So all is well as we start the fall season. We are all so excited to watch the leaves change and to feel the crisp air as we've waited 2 years for it! We wish you all a happy and healthy fall.

Summer fun

It's 8 PM and all three kids are asleep. Tom just scooted off to Melville Pond to try to catch a big fish and I have some time to myself as well (Opal is sleeping next to me) We are all doing terrific. Cole is doing climbing camp at a huge rock climbing gym about 30 minutes away and having a blast. Jack is still into the many transformers he received for his birthday. We have found a great preschool for him. He will be with kids his age that are taking another year before starting kindergarten, as well as a few kindergarteners. Haven is almost in underwear full time and no longer uses her pacifier. What a big girl! I'm keeping busy with the kids and Opal, who is just the best puppy we could have ever asked for. I've made a few friends but mostly have spent time with family this summer. Last weekend we had all of the Ferguson grandchildren at the Cape and wow was it wonderfully hectic! Next week we head to Maine for a few days with the Varney gang and we are very excited. Tom has started work and his first case is booked for next week. Newport Hospital is quite a change from Naval Hospital Guam and Tom looks forward to operating there. Well, I guess that's it. I wanted to post some pictures from recent weeks. Enjoy!

It Is Well With My Soul

Celebrate John

Well, once we made the long journey home from Guam I vowed not to do any more long trips for a while. However, for someone as important as John Austin we decided to journey to Syracuse, New York for a celebration that his family held at a beautiful lake park near to their home. I literally woke up the morning of, decided we were going, found a sitter for the puppy, threw clothes in a basket and off we went. The kids were up for it and so was I. Tom thought we were nuts but we did it! After living in Guam anything is possible. John Austin is doing so incredibly well and still there is still so much more progress to be made over coming months. Praise God! It's had to believe it's been 4 months since his car accident. The day started with pouring rain but the weather was absolutely beautiful when the picnic began. We enjoyed time with family and friends and it was great fun to watch the many cousins and second cousins playing together on the playground. Haven was actually born within minutes of my cousin Jessie's twins (Jonah and Elijah)! After everyone ate Uncle John gave a short speech and then we sang a few hymns that were important to John and his family during his recovery. What a wonderful day. The next morning Jessie and her gang, Uncle John, and my cousin Owen joined us for breakfast at the hotel and then we had to make the long journey home. On the way out of Syracuse we stopped at Aunt Evelyn's grave site. We all felt her absence at the picnic. I stood by my mom and was comforted knowing that though her body rests here, she is in heaven now. Here are a few pictures from the day. As you can see, twins run in our family! The twins on the right (Jonah and Elijah) were born minutes before Haven. The twins on the left are Molly and Lauren, my sister Annie's kids.


This is only a portion of the Davies and Ferguson gang. I can't imagine what a family reunion would be like. We're thinking towards a Harrison reunion next summer to coincide with my grandfather's 90th birthday.

Cole lost his front tooth on the car ride home. The matching one is loose too and I can't wait to get a picture of that one!

A new perspective

We've eaten a lot of ice cream lately! We've visited our favorite ice cream spots and discovered some new ones. Here are the kids at the playground/beach near my sister Annie's house. One night in a moment of weakness I bought 3 big tubs of Edys brand, and it lasted just a few short days.

We have been to the Ecotarium 5 times already and the train never gets old. The kids love going through the short tunnel and screaming as loudly as they can. My sister Kara and her kids Mae and Kaden joined us on this ride (and a little girl whose mom runs the snack bar there). Unfortunatly we learned yesterday that Kenda, the polar bear that Haven adores, passed away. Haven tells Tom daily that she is going to take him to the "tarium" when he comes home. We'll break the news to her then.

We finally went strawberry picking. Haven got right down to business and actually managed to fill her carton with ripe red ones. Cole filled his carton and Jack spent the entire time on the large dirt pile in front of the strawberry patch.

I had never been ice skating in the summer time. It just always felt like a winter thing to do. We enjoyed skating with our Orton Street friends Alyssia, Mia and Sophia at a rink close to our old house in Worcester. Cole was all about speed. I made it around the rink once with Jack before he called it quits.

The spring flowers have been especially beautiful this year. I don't think I ever truly appreciated them until we moved to Guam. Living in Guam made us think often about the things that make living in New England special. As we prepared to return home my list of "I can't wait to ... " grew by the minute. Over the last few weeks we've been doing those things we missed so much (berry picking, boating, smelling the rain, playing on the sand at the Cape, visiting with cousins and friends, etc. etc.) and it has meant so much. I love to watch the kids rediscover the little things - like standing at the window watching the lightning (we had lots of rain but no thunder and lightning in Guam) and riding in the car with their heads out the window feeling the breeze (in Guam we never opened windows). Here are a few pictures of us enjoying those things we missed.

Waiting

I apologize for the long delay in updating our blog. It's been quite a month. We arrived in Massachusetts on May 9th, traveled to upstate NY for a week to visit with Tom's family, and then returned to Massachusetts on May 15th (Tom's birthday). On the 16th Tom returned to Guam. Though it has been so nice to be reunited with family and friends, I was unprepared for the difficulty that our children, and especially Cole, would have with this move. I won't even try to put it all into words because I simply don't have the words at this point. I am just so thankful for the love and support we've received. This last week has been a week of answered prayer and we are all doing well and eagerly awaiting Tom's return on June 23rd. Then, on July 1st we move into our new rental home in Portsmouth RI. We're looking forward to time with Tom, time in our new home, and time at the Cape, in NY, and in Maine this summer. To all my friends in Guam - I miss you!!! Though I haven't had much time to call or write please know you are in my thoughts often. Here is a picture of the house we will be living in, a picture of my dad's new boat that he has named "Joy" and a few pictures from Davis' farmland (one of our favorite places to visit). In my next entry I'll post pictures of our family. It's going to take a while to sort through them all!

5 Days to Go!

Well, I thought I'd try to get one last post in before we leave Guam for good. It is truly bittersweet. Saying goodbye to this beautiful place and wonderful friends is hard, but knowing what awaits us at the other end makes me want to jump for joy! We've had a great two years experiencing Guam and making good friends but we're all ready to come home. I haven't been too emotional ... yet. Friday we went to Underwater World for the last time and we were able to enjoy it with Jack's preschool class. Yesterday we went to Tarza water park at the boys' request. I had to break the news that waterparks will be a thing of the past once we get home. Today is our last Sunday at church and we have to say goodbye to our Southern Christian Academy family. It is going to be very emotional, very difficult. Today was my last jog (the diving birds are out for the first time and I want to leave Guam with my head and hair intact!). This afternoon will be Cole's last outing with Mrs. Sablan, his kindergarten teacher and special friend. Haven has to say goodbye to her best friend Bella and, though Haven won't have a clue, it will break my heart. Jack will miss his friends at school and his girlfriends Logan and Avri. I need one more visit to Mt. Lam Lam for shaved ice surprise and to the mall for a tapioca ball drink and I'll be ready to get on the plane. Tom has had one foot out the door for months :)

The details: On Wednesday the movers come to take our express shipment and we check out of housing and check into the Sheraton Hotel where we enjoy one more day of paradise before flying out Friday morning. We'll be in Massachusetts just long enough to visit Portsmouth, RI, see the house we'll be renting and sign the lease. Then we'll spend the rest of the week in NY with Tom's side of the family. After we celebrate his birthday on the 15th of May we'll be saying goodbye to him. He'll come back to Guam to finish up and study for his oral boards. The rest of us will be in Massachusetts and hope to see many of you! June 23rd we'll see him again! Our lease in RI starts July 1st. Phew, that was a lot.

I wish I could post the many pictures I have taken over recent weeks but I can't get them onto this laptop. Here are a few pictures from the Perimeter Run that a friend mailed to me. I put together a team of women, the "guamamamas", and we ran a 48 mile relay around the southern perimeter of Guam. We had an amazing time and did well. Boy was it hot! You can tell the before picture by the background. We started at 4:30 AM and finished before noon.
